Scotland vs Hungary Prediction & Match Preview

SCOTLAND stand on the brink of history when they face Hungary knowing a win would almost certainly put them through from the group stages for the first time in their 12th tournament.

No team has ever got four points and not made it through as one of the best third place teams at least and realistically a win in Stuttgart would create history.

For Hungary, they must win too and hope three points would be enough.

Steve Clarke’s side produced a much-improved performance against Switzerland and could have won the game, although the Swiss did have two goals ruled out and missed two sitters.

But there was far more dig, effort and commitment than the complete flop against Germany in the opening game.

As usual, they won;t be lacking in support with phenomenal numbers of the Tartan Army travellng.

Hungary were many pundits’ dark horses, but they have been a major disappointment so far – they flopped against the Swiss really and struggled to lay a glove on hosts Germany in a 2-0 defeat.

They were on a 14-match unbeaten run and have picked the worst possible time to lose form.

Hungary are the narrowest of favourites with Betfred at 6/4 with the Scots 13/8. The draw is 14/5.

The nations have remarkably never met competitively, but they have faced each other nine times in friendlies. Scotland have won three times including the last meeting in Budapest four years ago and the Hungarians four times with the rest draws.

Manchester United star Scott McTominay is a Tartan Army hero and added to his seven goals during qualifying with the opener against the Swiss which was given to him despite a deflection. He is 3/1 to score anytime with Betfred.

Liverpool hero Dominik Szoboszlai hasn’t lived up to his billing so far but he is Hungary’s dangerman with plenty of quality and is 5/2 to net anytime with Betfred

Scotland will be without Kieran Tierney with the Arsenal man suffering yet another hamstring injury. Ryan Porteous is still suspended. Steve Clarke is likely to go with a similar side.

Hungary have an injury doubt over defender Botond Balogh, who hurt his ankle. Manager Marco Rossi will surely shake things up.

Scotland: Gunn, Hanley, Hendry, McKenna, Ralston, McGregor, McTominay, McGinn, Robertson, Adams.

Hungary: Gulacsi, Orban, Lang, Szalai, Bolla, Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez, Sallai, Szoboszlai, Adam.

Hungary will surely come out fired up here and that’s likely to be matched by a Scotland team who have the chance to make history.

And they could easily cancel themselves out. The call here is for a draw, which is unlikely to suit either team.

Both sides have issues defensively and look frail at the back. With both sides having to go for it, back both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at evens with Betfred
